The Innovation Canvas, a universal template for innovation
Innovate UK KTN drives positive change through innovation. It supports businesses and organisations on their innovation journeys in a range of different ways – including through its freely available Innovation Canvas. Ian Heywood, Knowledge Transfer Adviser at KTN explains how this works.
Can you describe the Innovation Canvas?
Basically, it’s a universal template for innovation.
We wanted to distil down all of our knowledge about innovation into one useful tool that businesses could use – something that helps them move through the entire journey of developing an innovative product, service or process, from making sure the right capacity is in place to deliver the project, through to pricing and marketing.
What areas of a project can the Innovation Canvas help with?
The Innovation Canvas helps businesses to take an audit and identify the actions they need to take in order to commercialise their project and make it a success.
So it won’t help you to solve a specific engineering problem, for example, but it will help you to look at areas like staffing and leadership. It will help you understand your target market and any risks or regulations you need to know about. And it will help you to articulate the value of your offer to potential customers – we find that this is often something that businesses find difficult.
Who can use the Innovation Canvas?
We’ve used the Innovation Canvas with almost any sector you can think of including charities, consumers, and business-to-business – here’s an example of how the Innovation Canvas has helped break down barriers for UK clean and green growth companies.
