Research and Innovation Services (RIS) provides guidance, expert advice and hands-on support for all aspects of research and research-related work, including securing funding, working with partners, undertaking knowledge exchange, demonstrating impact, commercialising outputs, ensuring good research practice and supporting professional development.

    Commercialisation

    The Research Commercialisation team's mission is to disseminate research outcomes via the commercialisation of ideas and new technologies. They provide a flexible package of support for IP development through which they can progress opportunities for commercialisation and economic development, including:

    • Assisting colleagues with the development of an IP strategy and commercialisation plan
    • Supporting funding applications for translation of research into practice such as commercialisation and follow on funding
    • Creation of spin-out companies
    • Licensing and sale of IP

    Research development

    The Research Development team is a small unit of research-funding specialists dedicated to supporting academic colleagues to develop their research from inception to application. They can work with individuals or groups to explore ideas and help develop them into research funding applications, linking with colleagues across the professional support services including those in Research Institutes, DARO, Partnerships and Engagement and Research Operations.     Business & partnership engagement

    The Partnerships and Engagement team within the Research and Innovation Services directorate works with external organisations and our academic colleagues to facilitate the creation of new research and commercial opportunities, ensuring that Durham University’s research is world-changing with global impact and reach. Support includes:

    • Strategic partnerships -  Get access to exceptional academic expertise, world-leading research, and state of the art equipment and facilities.
    • Consultancy -Typical consultancy projects involve advice on technical problems, evaluation of data, review of strategies or policies, participation in advisory boards and expert witness work.
