Scheme details

Area: Gateshead

Categories: Business support

Business stage: Trading business

Gateshead Business Innovation & Growth (BIG) is designed primarily for established SMEs that want to scale their operations, although a small number of ambitious startups may also be considered.

This is a funded programme so there is no cost to participating businesses.

Who the programme is for

The programme focuses on businesses operating in high value-added sectors, including:

  • Digital & technology
  • Creative & visitor economy
  • Advanced manufacturing & energy

However, businesses in other sectors are also welcome to apply if they have strong growth ambitions.

What the programme helps with

The aim of Gateshead BIG is simple: help local businesses move from organic growth to intentional, accelerated growth.

Support may include:

  • Developing a clear scale-up strategy
  • Encouraging innovation and new opportunities
  • Improving efficiency and productivity
  • Preparing for investment and investor readiness
  • Strengthening workforce capability and leadership

For many businesses, the challenge isn’t effort or ideas, it’s having the time, structure, and external perspective needed to turn ambition into a clear growth plan.

How the support works

Unlike many business programmes, Gateshead BIG is delivered primarily through one-to-one coaching and strategy consulting.

Participants work directly with a growth specialist, over a period of weeks or months depending on the company’s needs.

This tailored approach means:

  • Support is focused on your specific business challenges
  • The programme fits around the demands of running a business
  • There are no workshops to attend!

Eligibility: Established companies in Gateshead only

Gateshead BIG is delivered on behalf of Gateshead Council. It is funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
