George Manser is a personal trainer and the co-owner of meal-prep business, Giants Nutrition. Based in Peterlee, County Durham, George provides both online and in-person personal training and nutrition advice – catering for both individuals and groups.
Initially building his businesses through social media and networking/partnerships in the fitness community, George contacted the North East Growth Hub for support with business planning, strategy, and content creation - the latter being an important tool in growing his business. He was also interested in finding out what other business support might be available to him.
Support received from the North East Growth Hub
Business Growth Adviser, Dawn Jarvis, was able to make an introduction to Digital Boost – a platform that connects entrepreneurs with volunteer business professionals for free one-to-one and small group mentoring, as well as highly personalised business support. George was able to work with a digital specialist to learn techniques to improve his online content and explore software he could introduce into his business.
“It’s already made a positive impact,” said George. “I now dedicate a day a week to content creation and I’m seeing more views and engagement across my various platforms as a result. It's a great way to start conversations with potential clients and to get the business seen.”
Dawn also advised George to submit an application to finance and funding programme SWEF, which provides business grants for young entrepreneurs aged 18-30. George’s application was progressed to the SWEF Board and approved. The grant funding allowed George to create a starter pack for new clients, which includes a branded t-shirt to help improve brand awareness. By utilising spare stock, George is now able to fund the creation of the starter packs and generate profit for the business.
George continued: “It’s really helped me push my brand out there and build a community of people. And that has helped me gain a lot of interest from new clients.”
As part of the North East Growth Hub’s support, Business Growth Adviser Dawn also made introductions to regional partnership networks including North East England Chamber of Commerce.
“The guidance I’ve received from the North East Growth Hub has been really helpful. Dawn continues to keep me informed of other business support and finance and funding I may be able to access.”
Ambitions for the future
George is keen to grow the online coaching side of his business, and look at the potential of opening his own gym too.
“I’m investing in a lot of training and education so I can provide really tailored support to people – whatever stage they might be on their fitness journey. For example, I recently attended some pre and post-natal fitness courses, and I also attending a bodybuilding seminar in Ibiza. Taking part in these events is helping to expand my network too, which is all really helpful in growing my business.”
